The State Library serves as the archival library for the entire state of Brandenburg. It is legally required to permanently collect, archive, and make available to the public printed works and digital publications. This obligation is based on the Brandenburg State Press Law.

In addition to its general services, the City and State Library performs the following specialized tasks:

  • It collects and archives publications about and from the state of Brandenburg as completely as possible.
  • It preserves and catalogs its extensive holdings, making them available for general studies, exhibitions, and research both regionally and nationally.
  • The Online State Bibliography provides references to regional literature.
  • The Legal Deposit Office archives documents according to laws and regulations, including both conventional and digital publications (or publications in both printed and digital form) from the state of Brandenburg.
  • The historical collection includes books from the 15th to the 20th century.
  • Through regular exhibitions and events, the library shares its entrusted holdings with a wide audience.
